Draw Patiently, in One Direction, with Zach Atticus
Zach shares his meticulous process of drawing a pen portrait with single-directional crosshatching.
In his ongoing series of oil-on-wood paintings, artist Zach Atticus captures the drama and mystery of Toronto.
A great drawing is often the bedrock of a great painting, and so Zach keeps up a steady practice of drawing portraits in pen.
"Drawing in pen teaches you discipline," he says, "because you can't take back any mistakes."
In this lesson (78 mins), Zach shares his meticulous process of drawing a high-contrast portrait in ballpoint pen with a focus on single-directional crosshatching.
"My drawing style takes some patience and discipline," says Zach. "I remind myself to start light and get darker as my confidence goes up so that the marks I’m making are all in the right place."
Deep breath. Ok, let's draw!
