Crosshatching Masterclass: Draw a 'Handsome' Ink Portrait with Kimberly Ann Petersen

Self-taught artist Kimberly Ann Petersen creates dramatic ink portraits that appear etched into paper - an ode to the Western etching art she fell in love with growing up in rural Idaho.

Based in Augusta, Ga., Kimberly has five children and considers herself "living proof that anyone, no matter how busy, can create in the tiny margins of a day."
"You may only have five minutes at a time to draw or paint," she says, "but with a dedicated practice, five minutes at a time can add up to a lot of art."

When it comes to choosing portrait subjects, Kimberly is inspired by reference photos that tell a story. "I believe that the tiny details of a person's expression speak volumes," she says, "and I love bringing those details to life on the page."
In this lesson (86 mins), Kimberly draws an ink portrait of iconic Museum muse Rick N (above). The tutorial is a masterclass on crosshatching - an essential drawing technique for building volume and light - and an opportunity to practice drawing the always tricky human hand.
