Draw a Flitting Charcoal Portrait with Cindy MacDonald
"I love charcoal for its immediacy. You can create such a broad diversity of stroke, expressing directly what you intend to capture onto paper with full emotion."

"When I'm drawing, I flit about a bit," says artist Cindy MacDonald. "I don't want to focus too long on one item because then I'll overemphasize it."

Based in the "quaint city" of Toowoomba, in Queensland, Australia, Cindy is a life-long portrait artist. "Whether it be human or animal," she says, "the challenge of capturing the essence of a living soul is my constant passion."
In this lesson (49 mins), Cindy creates a charcoal portrait in her loose, intuitive style, "just letting my pencil do the work."

"I love charcoal for its immediacy," she says. "You can create such a broad diversity of stroke, expressing directly what you intend to capture onto paper with full emotion."
